AT time (a description)
Walking onto the AT is like passing through the wardrobe. Time moves at a different speed on this side. A week in your time seems to be roughly a month over here. I cross towns every few days and excitedly charge my phone to call my friends and hear what they have been doing and discuss my experiences. I have the feeling though that each time they see my name on the phone they must think, “Why is he calling again? I thought he was in the woods hiking. It’s been like three days.” To me though it’s more like, “I’ve been in the woods for like three weeks. What has happened in the lives of all of my friends?” The conversation begins, “Hey. It’s been a while…three days? What? Oh…well it felt like longer.”
While your three days probably passed in the regular routine, I have most likely been rained on a couple times and spent a few sleepless nights in a cold tent. Not that this makes my life any more exciting, it just means that I am in regular need of an encouraging voice. So, sorry for bugging all of you with constant calls to talk about life in the woods…and thanks for putting up with me. Talk to you in a few weeks…I mean days.
